BANGOR Cricket Club fourths kicked off their season with a well-earned victory away to Laurelvale thirds on Sunday, braving some thoroughly unseasonal conditions.
Persistent rain and blustery winds threatened to spoil the contest, but credit to Laurelvale for sticking it out and providing excellent hospitality throughout a stop-start afternoon.
The bowlers did the early damage, as Theo Wardley continued his impressive rise by picking up two wickets for 18 runs, while Stephen Cumper, on his long-awaited return, was typically tidy, claiming two for 12.
Fielding standards were excellent across the park and Ian Fletcher was immaculate behind the stumps, letting little past him, despite the slippery conditions.
In reply, Bangor’s chase was built on contributions all the way down the order. Carter McCormack top scored with a composed 25, while Fletcher followed his keeping heroics up with a rapid 21 off just 16 balls.
Iain Chapman chipped in with a brisk 15 from 12 deliveries, while Teddy McIlwaine added 11, and the runs kept ticking along at just the right pace, seeing Bangor home.
One of the more remarkable aspects of the win was the squad’s age spread, ranging from a sprightly 13 to a seasoned 62. Thanks to youngsters Theo Wardley, Teddy McIlwaine and Andy Stephens, the average age was dragged down to a very respectable sub-55.
All in all, it was a positive start to the season for the fourths, who will hope this sets the tone for the weeks ahead.
